Let’s say you’ve suffering from back pain but you don’t like popping pills, you’re not one for exercising and visiting the doctor is not your cup of tea. What can you do?

Some possibilites for relieving that pain may be waiting for you in your kitchen right now. Here are 5 ideas for back pain remedies that you can make at home . . .

1. Rice

We’ve talked about using heat as a way to increase blood flow and help ease your back pain. Well you can make a great heating pad with rice. Put a cup or two of uncooked rice in a sock and heat it up in your microwave for 45 seconds or so. Then put it on your back and let the heat work its magic.

2. Potato

The potato has been used as a remedy for all sorts of muscle and bone pain for hundreds of years. The reason they can be effective is that potatoes can stay warm for long periods of time. To make a potato wrap for your back, boil 1 – 2 potatoes until the skin is tender. Then put the potatoes in a sack and mash them up (no butter needed!). Then simply place the sack on your back and use it as a heating pad until the potato has cooled down.

3. Lemon

Lemon is one of the best and quickest back pain remedies out there. The key to its effectiveness is Vitamin C which works to reduce/eliminate back pain. To make this remedy, squeeze the juice out of one lemon and mix it with salt. Drink this mixture 2-3 times a day until the pain subsides.

4. Garlic

One of the oldest back pain remedies around, garlic can be used as a rubbing oil and when ingested serves to strengthen the immune system. When used orally, simply ingest 2 to 3 cloves each day or take a garlic supplement. To make a garlic rubbing oil, fry 10 or so cloves of garlic using 3 or 4 Tbsp of oil (ie. coconut, mustard or sesame oil) until they are golden brown. Once this garlic oil cools, rub it vigorously onto the affected area and let it stay there for around 3 hours. Keep this up for 15 days or until your back pain is completely gone.

5.  Epsom Salt

Warm baths can be an effective back pain remedy. Adding Epsom salt to the bath can help even more than just plain water becase Epsom salt can help ease swelling and inflammation.
