Sciatica Is A Group Of Symptoms That Is Caused By Many Disorders.

by Keith Leger on August 10, 2010

Sciatica is not actually a disorder. It is hard to fathom but it is a term for a group of symptoms rather than the actual problem. The symptoms are low back pain and leg pain. Sometimes the low back pain radiates down the leg. Sometimes there is tingling, numbness, or not being able to move the leg on the side that is affected.

This is an extremely painful and can be debilitating. With this group of symptoms there can be a large amount of actual causes. The most common cause for it is compression of a few of the sacral or lumbar nerves. These nerves are the ones in the base of your spine and the lower back. Another cause is when a spinal disk slips out of place and sits on the nerve.

Due to the broad range of causes this cluster of symptoms can be different for every individual which makes treatment difficult. There are a lot of doctors who disagree about how the different symptoms should be treated. It is difficult to tell what to treat and if the underlying cause is not found or is self inflicted it can be even harder. There are very few treatments that work other than to mask the symptoms and to relieve the pain.

Today there is just as much work or weight related causes as there is medical condition causes. Standing in a certain way or sitting on a large wallet can cause the symptoms. Also people with weight problems have a lot of difficulty with this. In their case weight loss is always recommended before true treatment can begin. These cases normally can be treated with a change of behavior or diet.

There are various treatments for these symptoms. Unfortunately just treating the symptoms will not work. These treatments do not treat the overall problems of it. There are surgeries, drug therapies, and various other things that can be used to help alleviate the symptoms. Chiropractics, weight loss, and other massage therapies can be helpful but are still not a cure. Also pain killers and pills do not cure it.

Researchers have been seeking an effective treatment for this and seem to agree that there is no way to do so unless the overall cause is found. Thousands of people are being treated for this cluster of symptoms to little or no use. Because there are so many causes of it testing for each one is a time consuming lengthy process.

There are alternative treatments for sciatica. These treatments can include exercises and herbal medicine. There are several doctors who agree that exercise is beneficial to sciatica patients.

Regardless of the causes sciatica is difficult to treat. There are a lot of underlying causes that would have to be treated in order to find a cure for these symptoms. As a cluster of symptoms the pain and other problems can only be masked until the cause is found and eliminated. More research needs to be done on this widespread problem.
